The Surgery for Malignant pleural mesothelioma after radiotherapy is very much of a new and beneficial approach. It consists of a short and accelerated course of high-dose, hemithoracic, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Further things are followed by extrapleural pneumonectomy. The complete aim of this trial was to estimate the efficiency of the SMART protocol.
Between 2008 to 2019, 96 patients who were eligible were enrolled for this technique. The results of the procedure were very impressive. According to the data, less than 49 % of patients faced 30-day perioperative grade 3–4 events. On the other side, only 1% of patients died due to the procedure. After completing IMRT, Extrapleural pneumonectomy was done at a median of 5 days (range 2–12).
Moreover, SMART is a very efficient way to get a long-term based effect. All the results do suggest that extrapleural pneumonectomy could be done on the patients, followed by radiotherapy. It will give a quick and long-term result. On the other grade, four events could be minimized further to improve the technique. These events could result in postoperative damage, and further could be harmful.
