Researchers suggest that interactive toxicity beliefs and intentional non-adherence appear to play a significant role in medication non-adherence in a substantial proportion of patients with HIV. Among men and women living with HIV who screened positive for drug use and who were being treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART), 35% reported intentionally missing ART doses when they used drugs. This sub-group reported common perceptions about mixing HIV medications with alcohol and other drugs.
