The most prevalent solid and symptomatic tumor in women are uterine leiomyomas (fibroids). They are the most common reason for hysterectomy, which is a permanent and successful surgical therapy for leiomyoma. However, many people benefit from and seek treatment alternatives other than hysterectomy because they want to continue having children or keep their uterus. The goal of this Practice Bulletin is to give up-to-date evidence-based advice for the medicinal, surgical, and procedural therapy of symptomatic leiomyomas.
The use of morcellation in the surgical therapy of leiomyomas is outside the scope of this document and is discussed in a separate publication by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
