For recipients of kidney transplant who received an infusion of dexmedetomidine, early postoperative renal function was improved, according to a study published in Annals of Medicine. However, total vessel density was not greatly different between the intervention and control groups. Yu-Change Yeh, MD, PhD, and colleagues randomly assigned transplant recipients to a control group or dexmedetomidine group. Following anesthesia, patients in the dexmedetomidine group received an infusion of dexmedetomidine until 2 hours post-surgery. A dark-field video microscope recorded sublingual microcirculation. Creatinine levels of patients 2 days after surgery were considerably lower in the dexmedetomidine group than in the control group. However, on day 7, patients’ creatinine levels did not differ considerably between the two groups. Additionally, at 2 hours post-surgery, total vessel density did not contrast appreciably between the two groups.
