The following is a summary of “Epidemiology Of Thyroid Eye Disease In Olmsted County, Minnesota,” published in the October 2023 issue of Ophthalmology by Rachmasari et al.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to characterize the epidemiology of Thyroid Eye Disease (TED). They identified a population-based cohort of Olmsted County, Minnesota, residents with newly diagnosed TED (April 3, 2002, and December 31, 2021) using the medical diagnostic index of the Rochester Epidemiology Project. Incidence rates and point prevalence of TED were calculated for individuals aged 18 and older.
The results showed 137 incident patients, with 124 (90.5%) being female (P<0.0001). Olmsted County had an incidence of 6.24 cases per 100,000 person-years, matching the US population rate of 6.25 cases per 100,000 person-years (age and sex-adjusted incidence). Women showed a higher incidence (10.94 cases per 100,000 person-years) than men (1.22 cases per 100,000 person-years). Peak IR was 17.94 cases per 100,000 person-years for women and 4.04 cases for men, both in the 70-79 age group. Most cases (77/137) occurred between 50-79 years of age. No discernible trend was observed in yearly incidence between 2002 and 2021. The overall estimated point prevalence per 100,000 was 65.6 (95% CI, 57.8 – 72.9). Prevalence was 117.6 (95% CI, 96.5 – 141.4) for females and 11.2 (95% CI, 5.1 – 21.2) for males (P<0.0001).
They concluded that TED incidence stayed constant over the past two decades, with most cases emerging after age 50, emphasizing the ongoing necessity for education and management.
