The following is a summary of “A Co-Designed Online Education Resource on Gastrostomy Feeding for Parents and Caregivers to Support Clinical Care,” published in the November 2023 issue of Pediatrics by Murphy, et al.
For a study, researchers sought to identify and address the educational needs of parents with children requiring gastrostomy tube placement. The research involved a collaborative process to develop an online resource named Nourish, which combines video and written materials. The study further evaluated the resource’s suitability for enhancing parent learning in the context of gastrostomy tube care.
A qualitative descriptive study was conducted to identify parental needs related to gastrostomy education. The data obtained were used in collaboration with parents who have children with gastrostomy tubes to codesigning the Nourish resource. The resource, consisting of 19 videos and 18 accompanying worksheets, was then evaluated by 20 parents to assess its effectiveness in supporting learning, building confidence, and aiding in planning.
Parental needs were categorized into Decision Making, Hospital Stay, and Living with Gastrostomy, representing the gastrostomy “journey.” The Nourish resource addressed these needs comprehensively. Feedback from 20 parent caregivers indicated high ratings for the resource’s ability to support learning, boost confidence, and aid in planning for gastrostomy care.
The collaborative process and development of the Nourish resource proved successful in addressing the educational needs of parents navigating the complexities of gastrostomy tube placement for their children. Positive feedback suggested that such resources could serve as valuable adjuncts to clinical care, supporting parents in making informed decisions and managing their child’s gastrostomy tube feedings effectively.
