Continuous glucose monitoring provides increased benefits in glycemic management compared with self-monitoring of blood glucose. According to a study published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, continuous glucose management (CGM) is particularly beneficial among patients using real-time continuous glucose monitoring. Researchers used multiple databases to assess the efficacy of continuous glucose monitoring versus self-monitoring of blood glucose for maintaining glycemic control among patients with T2D. The study’s primary endpoint was glycated hemoglobin, while the secondary endpoints included time in range, time below range, and time above range. The researchers conducted traditional and network meta-analyses to explore the efficacy of CGM on glycemic control in T2D. The study included 11 high-quality studies and identified 1,425 individuals with T2D. A meta-analysis showed that CGM exhibited a significantly decreased time below range and a significantly increased time in range compared with patients in the SMBG cohort. The network meta-analysis showed that real-time CGM can improve glycemic control.
