The following is a summary of “Performance evaluation of an automated peritoneal dialysis solution generation system in patients using automated peritoneal dialysis,” published in the March 2024 issue of Nephrology by Sharma et al.
Patients on Peritoneal dialysis (PD) often use several liters of PD solution daily for their treatment, making it harder to order and store. Home PD solution generation might help.
Researchers conducted a prospective study to develop an APD Solution Generation System (SGS) that produces tap water at home with PD solution.
They evaluated the SGS performance in adults with kidney disease and maintenance PD. The primary endpoint was microbiological testing (checking for germs) and effectiveness (chemical composition) of the water generated by the SGS device.
The results showed that 22 patients from 12 U.S. Centers were enrolled, and 14 patients completed the trial. Analysis showed that all 64 water samples collected met the ISO standards. Secondary safety analysis showed 34 adverse events were found in 12 patients, including three serious events (Negative peritonitis, bacterial peritonitis, and atrial fibrillation).
Investigators concluded that SGS worked well, making PD solutions at home and meeting safety standards.
