The following is a summary of “Clinical characteristics of adults with alcohol dependence syndrome comorbid with antisocial personality disorder: a cross-sectional study,” published in the August 2024 issue of Psychiatry by Jarčušková et al.
Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a constant habit of infringing on others’ rights with traits like deception, impulsivity, and aggression.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to investigate the occurrence of comorbid ASPD with the clinical features linked with ASPD in adult people with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome (ADS).
They performed a study of 100 consecutive subjects with ADS between August and September 2023 using different assessments and questionnaires involving the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-II) and a computed tomography (CT) scan was performed on 47.5% of participants.
The results showed 20 of the 100 individuals were excluded. About 35% of the remaining participants were with ASPD. Individuals with both ADS and ASPD were younger who started drinking earlier, had increased hospitalization rates, and high scores on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) (all P< 0.05%) with a decrease in education levels, elevated unemployment, and reduced marriage rates (all P< 0.05%). At the same time, more family members with ADS had incarceration or mental illness and a heightened frequency of trauma (all P< 0.05%). Depression, anxiety, stress (all P< 0.05%), and sleep problems (P= 0.058) were connected with ASPD. Compared to subjects with ADS, participants with comorbid ASPD had lower Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores (P= 0.046) and struggled with concentration and linguistic subtests
Investigators concluded a high incidence of comorbid ASPD in individuals with ADS, highlighting the demographic, psychometric, and cognitive factors.
