The following is a summary of “Shared decision-making with patients with complex care needs: a scoping review,” published in the November 2024 issue of Primary Care by Perron et al.
Patients with complex care needs (PCCNs) face challenges due to multimorbidity, mental health issues, and social vulnerability. Shared decision-making (SDM) improves decision quality but faces specific challenges in follow-up care for these patients.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to analyze SDM with PCCNs.
They conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology, searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Academic Search Complete. Empirical studies on SDM with PCCNs from 1997 to 2023 were included. A mixed thematic analysis using deductive (Ottawa Decision Support Framework and Interprofessional SDM Model) and inductive approaches was performed. Experts were consulted to enhance the findings.
The results showed that 12 studies highlighted key specificities of SDM with PCCNs, including multiple concurrent decisions and the multidisciplinary, intersectoral nature of their care.
The study concluded that recognizing specificities in SDM with PCCNs is essential to maintaining its benefits and ensuring positive health outcomes.
