The following is a summary of “Experiences of undergoing internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy for climate change-related distress: a qualitative study,” published in the November 2024 issue of Psychiatry by Lindhe et al.
ICBT has shown promise in treating climate change-related distress. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to analyze participants’ experiences with an internet-delivered CBT program for climate change-related distress.
They conducted telephone interviews with 9 participants who completed 8 weeks of ICBT for climate change-related distress. A semi-structured guide was used to explore their treatment experiences. Data was transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis.
The results showed three main themes: (1) Same old feelings, brand new strategies, (2) Bumps in the road, and (3) Personalized climate engagement. Participants reported developing new coping strategies for emotions, facing challenges during treatment, and adapting their pro-environmental behavior to their needs and circumstances.
The study concluded that participants found the treatment helpful but expressed concerns about its format. These insights can guide future development of ICBT for climate change-related distress.
