The following is a summary of “An overview and evaluation of the differential attainment champion role in the North West of England GP school,” published in the July 2024 issue of Primary Care by Morgan et al.
Since October 2021, funding has supported experienced General Practitioner (GP) educators as Differential Attainment Champions (DAC) in the Northwest of England.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the impact of DAC in the Northwest of England.
They conducted online semi-structured interviews with 10 DACs and 15 trainees during the first 12 months of the intervention program. The aim was to gather their views and experiences of the initiative.
The results showed 3 main themes: DACs’ adaptive support, barriers to role fulfillment, and the positive impact on training. Key aspects included tailored support, proactive assistance early in GP core training, and help with e-portfolios, examination preparation, and personal matters. Trainees valued one-to-one support, leading to improved examination outcomes and increased portfolio engagement, recognized by some Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) panels.
Investigators found that the individualized and adaptive approach was effective but challenging to quantify regarding trainee support. Monitoring of DAC workload was necessary to ensure sustainable impact.
