A systematic review and meta-analysis has found that laparoscopic bariatric surgery appears to be safer than open bariatric surgery for those requiring the operation. Wound infection and incisional hernia risks were lower for patients who received the laparoscopic technique than for those receiving open surgery. Risks of reoperation, anastomotic leak, and all-cause mortality, however, were similar for both the laparoscopic and open methods.
