Marital status may have an effect on outcomes for men with HF, according to findings presented at the 2023 American College of Cardiology Annual Meeting. Katarina Leyba, MD, and colleagues assessed survival rates in HF by gender and marital status. Lifelong bachelors had a significantly higher risk for dying compared with married men; men who were separated, divorced, or widowed did not. Marital status was not a significant predictor of death in women with HF. The potentially beneficial effects of marriage “could include health-seeking behaviors, family support in older age, nutrition status, or frailty,” Dr. Leyba said.
