One in five older adults hospitalized with RSV experienced an acute cardiac event, and such events were associated with approximately double the risk for severe outcomes, according to findings published in Circulation. Daewi Kim, MBioMedSci, and colleagues assessed the frequency and severity of acute cardiac events among 3,959 adults aged 50 and older (mean age, 73) who were hospitalized with RSV. A fifth of the study population (20.8%) had an acute cardiac event during hospitalization, most commonly acute heart failure (14.3%). The study team noted that acute cardiac events were more likely in adults aged 75 years and older (25.0%) and those with underlying cardiac disease (30.4%). When compared with those who did not experience an acute cardiac event, patients who had were more likely to be admitted to the ICU (16.8% vs 27.0%) and die in the hospital (4.1% vs 8.8%).
