Northwestern University investigators suggest that late mortality following cardiac surgery for congestive heart failure (CHF) appears to be predicted by readmission within 30 days. Independent risk factors for readmission included age, gender, and cardiopulmonary bypass time. When compared with all patients readmitted for surgery-related causes, those readmitted for CHF had worse survival rates.
