The following is the summary of “Forced inspiratory suction and swallow tool” a novel instrument to convert paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) to sinus rhythm, a case report and introduction of the device” published in the December 2022 issue of Emergency medicine by Mantha, et al.
A high heart rate and a small QRS complex are two defining characteristics of the arrhythmia known as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), commonly referred to simply as SVT. Both the beginning and the end of it come on very suddenly. The SVT can be converted utilizing a variety of treatments, including the Valsalva maneuver, holding one’s breath for a few seconds, or slapping cold water on one’s face.
All of these treatments can be performed by the patient themselves. These therapies are just some of the many documented; there are many more. This is a presentation of a case of SVT, which was rapidly converted to sinus rhythm with the assistance of an innovative technology that was created and patented at the University of Texas in Austin. This product is sold under the brand name “HiccAway,” despite the fact that its official name is the “Forced Inspiratory Suction and Swallow Tool” (FISST).
The elimination of hiccups is the primary purpose of this over-the-counter remedy, and it does not require a doctor’s prescription to be obtained. The procedure corresponds to “Bernoulli’s Principle,” which relates to applications of the law of conservation of energy and requires that water be compelled to travel through a pressure valve for it to work.
