The following is a summary of “Associations Between Asthma and Life’s Essential 8: A Cross-sectional Study,” published in the January 2025 issue of Pulmonology by xu and Tang.
Asthma is a complex respiratory disease influenced by various factors, while Life’s Essential 8 (LE8), developed by the American Heart Association, aims to enhance cardiovascular health.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to examine whether LE8 acted as a protective factor against asthma.
They performed multiple logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and subgroup analysis on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2001 and 2018.
The results showed 3,360 participants with asthma. After controlling for confounders, LE8 scores were inversely related to asthma prevalence (odds ratio (OR) per 10-point increase, 0.85 [95% CI, 0.82-0.88]). The adjusted OR for asthma risk for moderate and high LE8 scores compared to low scores were 0.59 (0.51, 0.68) and 0.48 (0.39, 0.58), respectively. The Nonlinear correlations were observed between LE8 scores and asthma (p nonlinear=0.01), as well as between health factor scores and asthma (P nonlinear=0.01), but a linear dose-response was found between health behavior score and asthma (P nonlinear=0.30). Subgroup analysis revealed no significant interaction effects (P >0.05), except for sex and drinking status (P for interaction=0.02).
Investigators concluded that asthma exhibits an association with components of the LE8, suggesting that interventions targeting the factors might contribute as a reduction in asthma prevalence.
