Results of a meta-analysis indicate that systemic corticosteroid therapy appears to improve outcomes among hospitalized adults with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). For patients with CAP, systemic corticosteroid therapy reduced mortality by about 3% when compared with no corticosteroid therapy. It also decreased the need for mechanical ventilation by about 5% and hospital length of stay by about 1 day.
