The Moderna and Pfizer mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are safe for patients who’ve undergone solid organ transplants and are on immunosuppression drugs to prevent organ rejection, according to a study published in Transplantation. The 187 study participants had a median age of 18, underwent transplantation a median of 6 years earlier, and received an initial dose of either mRNA vaccine between December 16, 2020, and January 16, 2021. Among them, most (52%) were kidney recipients, followed by recipients of liver (19%), heart (14%), lung (9%), kidney and pancreas (3%), and other multi-organ (3%) transplants. Adverse reactions were similar to those experienced by the general population, and no cases of organ rejection were reported.
