Socioeconomic variables play a significant role in low rates of medication adherence among patients with T2D. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 50% of patients do not adhere to the recommended medication regimen laid out by their physician. To assess the prevalence of nonadherence to antidiabetic therapies among patients with T2D and identify its causes, Alikhan Karymsakov, MD, and colleagues conducted a 3-part questionnaire among 324 patients with T2D. The survey included questions on adherence and a summary of patient responses to nonadherence. The results, published in the Electronic Journal of General Medicine, showed that sociodemographic factors, including age, employment status, and alcohol use, along with comorbidity status, played a significant role in medication adherence rates in this patient set. According to the researchers, the results suggest that these variables significantly impact adherence to antidiabetic medications compared to patients without comorbidities or those not taking additional medications.
