The following is a summary of “Pilot randomised controlled trial on the feasibility and intervention satisfaction with an educational group programme for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and their caregivers,” published in the February 2025 issue of BMC Psychiatry by Skliarova et al.
This pilot RCT presents a patient-centered educational group program developed with user representatives, caregivers, and community mental health center (CMHC) health personnel.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to assess the feasibility of a psychoeducational program and participant satisfaction. The RCT examined its potential benefits for adults recently diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
They conducted a 2-arm RCT with 60 outpatients from a Norwegian CMHC. They assigned the intervention group (IG) to a 2-session, patient-centered, peer-cofacilitated program plus standard treatment, while the control group (CG) received standard treatment and a 1-hour individual informational session. They assessed feasibility through recruitment, attendance, and dropout rates. They measured acceptability using the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire 4-item scale (CSQ-4) and a 3-item satisfaction scale. They applied 4 patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): 1 for self-efficacy, 2 for ADHD symptoms, and 1 for quality of life. They used intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) for statistical analysis.
The results showed that 56 outpatients were divided into IG (n=30) and CG (n=26), with a 93.3% recruitment rate and a 16% dropout rate. The attendance rate was 92%, and retention was 56.6% for IG and 76.9% for CG. ITT analysis showed improved satisfaction on the CSQ-4 and information satisfaction scales. Caregivers also reported high satisfaction with the CSQ-4. PROM results were mixed in ITT and PP analyses.
Investigators found the 2-session, patient-centered, peer-cofacilitated psychoeducational program feasible and well-received, with high satisfaction from outpatients and caregivers.
