Laparoscopic colectomy appears to significantly reduce short- and long-term healthcare utilization and costs, according to a study. At 90 days, open colectomy was associated with 1.26-fold higher costs. Open colectomy was also linked to greater use of healthcare services use and more estimated days off from work when compared with the laparoscopic approach. Similar trends were seen at 1 year after surgery.
