A national study of 2008-2009 data regarding availability of ED preventive services indicates that 19% of sampled EDs offered HIV screening. Teaching hospitals offered HIV screening more frequently than non-teaching hospitals (38% vs 18%). ED directors that participated in the study expressed concerns about the added costs of ED preventive services, increasing social work availability, and implementing testing laws consistent with CDC recommendations. The authors reported that addressing these factors may help more EDs increase adoption of HIV screening.
