The etiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is poorly understood. Researchers set out to conduct a literature study on the connection between depression, marijuana use, and erectile dysfunction (ED), and LUTS/BPH. LUTS/BPH is associated with depression as well as ED in its own right. The causation and mechanical link in each of these cases are unknown. The influence of marijuana on the illness complex of LUTS/BPH, as it becomes more prevalent in the general population, has not been well researched, although new findings suggest both short-term benefits and long-term caution.

Depression, a kind of CNS dysfunction, and ED, which is presumably mediated by endothelial dysfunction, are both linked with LUTS/BPH. The presence of cannabinoid receptors in urologic organs, along with recent population research, suggests that marijuana has a modulatory impact on voiding, however, there is still a significant information gap.
