Endocrinology: The World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF) will take place virtually August 20-22, with a mix of live and pre-recorded sessions. Among the topics: management of patients at each level of fracture risk, the pros and cons of transient treatment discontinuation, the role of combination and sequential treatment of osteoporosis, treatment implications of new definitions of sarcopenia, cause/management of high bone mass, and more.
Hematology: The FDA is expected to make a decision by August 21 on a gene therapy for hemophilia A (BioMarin Pharmaceutical’s valoctocogene roxaparvovec, BMN-270).
Nephrology: The FDA is expected to make a decision by August 22 on Tricida’s veverimer (TRC-101), a counterion-free, non-absorbed polymer that selectively binds hydrochloric acid in the gastrointestinal tract, to treat metabolic acidosis, a common and serious complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Regulatory: The FDA’s Science Advisory Board to the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) will hold a virtual public advisory committee meeting on August 18-19 to provide an overview of the Science Advisory Board Subcommittee Site Visit Report. On the first day, the major FDA Centers will also discuss their specific research strategic needs and potential areas of collaboration. On the second day, the NCTR’s research divisions will provide an update.
Surgery: The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care will take place virtually on the evenings of August 17 and 18. There will be live forums on melanoma, hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer, colorectal cancer, sarcoma, immuno-oncology, and more.
