The following is a summary of “Lysosomal glucose sensing and glycophagy in metabolism,” published in the November 2023 issue of Endocrinology by Mancini, et al.
The catabolization of cargo located both within and outside of the cell is the responsibility of lysosomes, which are organelles present in individual cells. They are also a platform for nutrition sensing and represent an important signaling node that connects bioenergetic inputs to changes in cellular metabolism. In addition, they are a platform for understanding nutrition. Additionally, they have a role in the control of the metabolic processes that occur inside cells.
Even though lysosomal amino acid and lipid sensing in metabolism have been well established, lysosomal glucose sensing and the involvement of lysosomes in glucose metabolism still need to be completely understood. Lysosomes are involved in several metabolic processes. Lysosomes are the cells accountable for transporting glucose molecules throughout the body.
The lysosome is an essential component in the process of glucose metabolism, and they shall discuss its function within the framework of this review. Specifically, they will concentrate on the mechanisms of glucose and glycogen sensing in the lysosome, glycophagy, and the transport of glucose inside the lysosome, as well as how these activities influence autophagy and energy metabolism. The role that lysosomal glucose metabolism plays in the development of metabolic and genetic illnesses will also be the topic of a short conversation that will take place.
