This study aims to examine the most recent literature on the use of opioid-sparing multimodal analgesic strategies to manage perioperative pain in patients who had inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) surgery and to offer the penile implant surgeon a range of non-opioid-based pain management strategies for IPP management. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative interventions have all been demonstrated to successfully cut pain ratings and minimize opiate use. Post-operative pain has been reduced for certain individuals who underwent IPP surgery using specific surgical methods. Multimodal analgesia (MMA) protocols used in IPP surgery and adapted from other surgical disciplines and urologic subspecialties have shown good outcomes in terms of postoperative pain management and opiate use.
Patients undergoing IPP surgery benefit significantly from protocols that include enhanced surgical skills and multimodal analgesia. More research is needed to evaluate long-term pain management and opioid usage in patients undergoing IPP surgery utilizing these novel methods.
