An analysis of patients who had undergone esophagectomy found that postoperative delirium appears to affect about one-half of this population. More than one-third of study patients required psychoactive medications for their symptoms of delirium. Postoperative delirium was significantly associated with longer hospital or ICU stay, postoperative complications, and longer time under postoperative mechanical ventilation, among other factors.
