Candida auris has increased in the United States in recent years, especially in 2021, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Tom Chiller, MD, MPHTM, and colleagues described changes in the US epidemiology of C. auris from 2019 to 2021 based on national surveillance data. Through December 31, 2021, there were 3,270 clinical cases and 7,413 screening cases of C. auris reported in the United States. Each year, the percentage increase in cases grew, from an increase of 44% in 2019 to an increase of 95% in 2021. In 2021, colonization screening volume increased by more than 80% and screening cases increased by more than 200%. Seventeen states identified their first C. auris case from 2019 to 2021. In 2021, the number of C. auris cases that were resistant to echinocandins was about three-fold higher than in each of the previous 2 years.
