The following is a summary of “Nasal food challenge with hen’s egg white allergen,” published in the January 2025 issue of Allergy and Immunology by Krzych-Fałta et al.
Nasal allergen provocation tests are crucial in diagnosing allergies caused by environmental factors. Recent interest has focused on their potential in food allergy diagnosis.
Researchers conducted a prospective study to evaluate the usefulness of the nasal allergen provocation test in individuals allergic to hen’s egg whites.
They included 57 subjects (32 with hen’s egg white allergy and 25 healthy controls). The nasal allergen provocation test used hen’s egg white allergen and was assessed via visual analog scale, optical rhinometry, and measurement of sIgE and tryptase levels in nasal lavage fluid.
The results showed a moderately positive nasal mucosal response in optical rhinometry (ΔE = 0.34 OD) after applying 100 µg of hen’s egg white allergen.
Investigators concluded that nasal food challenge with hen’s egg white allergen was a promising diagnostic alternative for patients with food allergies. Further studies were needed to standardize the method.
