Researchers conducted this study to investigate the correlation between serum apelin and galectin-3 levels with insulin resistance (IR) in women with preeclampsia (PE).
The serum apelin, galectin-3, and insulin levels were measured in 60 with preeclampsia and 30 normotensive pregnant to obtain the relevant data and come to a clinically useful conclusion. The women that participated in the study belonged to Iraq.
After the serum apelin, researchers measured galectin-3 and insulin levels and then observed that the women with preeclampsia group had significantly lower apelin and higher galectin-3 levels than the control group. Women with preeclampsia group exhibited dyslipidemia and had higher β-cell functions than the controls. After careful analysis, researchers observed that the Galectin-3 level correlates with other variables that were: insulin, glucose, and insulin resistance. High galectin-3 levels were also appearing to be associated positively with dyslipidemia.
The study concluded through its findings that there is a possible contribution of galectin-3 to the harmful effects of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in women with preeclampsia. Further studies are required to explore the phenomenon in depth.
