The following is a summary of “Measurement of serum hepcidin-25 by latex agglutination in healthy volunteers and patients with hematologic disorders,” published in the February 2024 issue of Hematology by Kawabata et al.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study investigating the association between hepcidin-25 levels measured using a novel, readily available immunoassay, and iron metabolism indicators to assess its diagnostic potential.
They utilized a newly developed latex agglutination method and an easily accessible automated analyzer to measure serum hepcidin-25 levels. Involved 93 volunteers from the hospital personnel and 112 patients with different hematological disorders.
The results showed a strong positive correlation between serum hepcidin-25 and ferritin, as well as C-reactive protein levels, in both volunteers and patients. Notably, a significant negative correlation existed among patients with hematologic disorders between hepcidin-25 levels, hemoglobin concentrations, and reticulocyte counts. Of interest, the ratio of hepcidin-25 to ferritin was notably low in patients with hemolytic anemia and myelodysplastic syndromes with ring sideroblasts.
Investigators concluded that a novel immunoassay for the hepcidin-25/ferritin ratio may help screen hematopoietic and iron metabolism disorders.
