The following is a summary of “Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections: A position paper of the International Society for Infectious Diseases, 2024 update,” published in the November 2024 issue of Infectious Disease by Rosenthal et al.
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) impact patient outcomes and healthcare costs globally, requiring urgent attention. Several national, multinational, and multicontinental studies using a comprehensive approach have led to notable reductions in CAUTI rates and associated mortality.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study by the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) to consolidate the latest recommendations for preventing CAUTI, examining rates, hospital stays, costs, mortality, and risk factors across various income-level countries.
They reviewed current recommendations and evidence-based strategies for CAUTI prevention. The expert panel examined data on CAUTI incidence, healthcare impacts, and risk factors across different economic contexts to develop practical preventive measures.
The results showed significant differences in CAUTI rates, healthcare costs, hospital stays, and mortality between high-income and low- to middle-income countries. The review highlighted the effectiveness of evidence-based CAUTI prevention strategies across diverse healthcare settings.
Investigators concluded that implementing evidence-based strategies could significantly reduce CAUTI rates and costs and improve patient outcomes globally.
