Tissue eosinophil count (TEC) from a single biopsy appears to be reliable for clinical use in managing chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), according to study results published in International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology. For the study, researchers evaluated TEC from the polyps of 37 adults with CRSwNP obtained upon recruitment and again at 3 and 6 months. Median TECs at these time points were 17, 19, and 21 cells/high-powered field, respectively. Investigators observed no statistical differences across these time points for TEC, blood eosinophil counts, blood eosinophil percentages, 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test score, or Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score. Blood eosinophil percentages at all time points and blood eosinophil counts at 0 and 3 months significantly correlated with TEC.
