The following is a summary of “A retrospective study of WeChat app-based health management for patients with gestational diabetes mellitus,” published in the November 2024 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Huang and Zhai.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a condition of elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy, requires effective health management for individuals during pregnancy.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study evaluating the effectiveness of WeChat app-based health management for people diagnosed with GDM.
They analyzed data from 100 individuals diagnosed with GDM. People enrolled from April 2022 to June 2022 were included in the control group (n = 50) and received routine health management. Those enrolled from April 2023 to June 2023 were included in the observation group (n = 50) and received app-based health management. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (2h-PBG), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were compared before and 4 and 8 weeks after app management. The incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes and weight gain during pregnancy was also compared.
The results showed that FPG and 2h-PBG levels were lower in the observation group compared to the control group 4 and 8 weeks after the intervention (P<0.05). Additionally, the observation group had fewer adverse pregnancy outcomes and less weight gain during pregnancy than the control group (P<0.05).
They concluded that WeChat app-based health management improved blood glucose control reduced adverse pregnancy outcomes and minimized weight gain in people with GDM.
